IT Security Tip #11: You’ve been HACKED! What’s the first thing you should do?

IT Security Tip #11: You’ve been HACKED! What’s the first thing you should do?

No matter how diligent you are about security, there’s always a chance you can get hacked. To limit potential damage and to protect your CLIENTS, prospects and vendors you need to put a disaster recovery plan in place NOW.

But what should you do as soon as you find out you’ve been hacked?
First, contact your IT department (us) IMMEDIATELY. The faster the attack can be addressed – and the extent of the damage to data, applications and machines can be determined – the better your chances are of preventing much bigger problems. We’ll go to work on containing the attack and conducting a full scan of your network.

Based on what is discovered, you may receive the advice to contact the local FBI office and your attorney. Your legal responsibilities are vast after a data breach. Notifications need not only go out to all entities effected, but to law enforcement, and in some cases, the NY Attorney General and consumer protection agencies as well.

Your attorney can best direct you on what you need to do and how to do it.
And, PS.
Don't forget to call your insurance agent as well. This is what your cyber liability policy is for!
