Liberty Public Library presents “Hiking Boots, Bears, & Blisters” on Thursday, August 29th @ 6:00 PM
Ever gone for a hike and wondered what you would do if you ran into a bear? Or cooked at your campsite and didn’t know where to safely store leftovers? Or wanted to try backpacking but could use tips on how to start?
Jeffersonville resident Ashley Furey will answer these questions and much more in her presentation “Hiking Boots, Bears, and Blisters: A Woman's Backpacking Adventures from the Catskills to the Grand Canyon” at the Liberty Public Library on Thursday, August 29th at 6 PM. A second-grade teacher at the George L. Cooke School in Monticello, Furey is no stranger to adventure. In 2019 she took time off from teaching to travel the world. After six months on the road, she and her partner barely made it back to the US in late March of 2020 just as borders were closing due to Covid19. Frustrated by cabin fever, she began hiking in the Catskills....which led to summiting all 35 of the high peaks, which led to backpacking the 165-mile Tahoe Rim Trail, which led to an overnight rim-to-rim hike of the Grand Canyon after a snowfall. Furey will talk about the preparations and challenges, frustrations and epiphanies of hiking and camping alone...but far from lonely. Whether you're an armchair adventurer or an outdoorsperson looking to step to the next level, this will be a fascinating opportunity to learn, be inspired, and ask questions!
